Safety For All
Private prisons spend money on elections buying out politicians in both parties, get legislation passed that lets them operate however they want, and then pushes for legislation that makes us all less safe - keeping people locked up so they can make money. It’s an obvious grift, it’s happening with our tax dollars, and it’s infecting every part of public safety in Florida including our failed immigration enforcement. Fiscal responsibility means ending 287g, cutting the GEO Group out of our politics entirely, and making the people’s protectors accountable to the people.
What we need to do:
- End Private Prisons: End Florida's private prison contracts and stop rewarding companies like GEO Group.
- Real Police Accountability: Win real civilian oversight committees statewide, giving the public a vote before police get military gear, and a real path to accountability when officers cross the line.
- Get ICE Out of Our Communities: Repeal the state mandate forcing local police into ICE agreements and ban them outright.
How we do it:
- End Private Prisons: Repeal Chapter 957, F.S. (1993), which authorizes private prison contracts on proof of just 7% savings; directly targets GEO Group's new $130M/year Florida DOC contracts.
- Real Police Accountability: Amend F.S. 112.532 to authorize genuine civilian oversight boards; require local governing-body approval before police accept 1033 military equipment (California AB 481 model); create a Colorado-style state civil rights claim barring qualified immunity as a defense; fund statewide replication of Miami-Dade's pre-arrest diversion model.
- Get ICE Out of Our Communities: Repeal SB 4-C (2025), which mandates 287(g) agreements for agencies with 25+ officers; go further and prohibit new agreements entirely (TRUST Act model); refile Sen. Carlos Guillermo Smith's VISIBLE Act (SB 316).
