Workers Rights For All

Again - we have a larger economy than Australia. So why do we have one of the worst gaps between wages and cost of living in America? Why do we state preemptions on heat protection in a state known for dangerous temperatures? The answer is simple - the rich and powerful gutted our ability to work together through unions, and that changes now.

What we need to do:

  1. Give Power Back to Workers: Repeal the state bans on water breaks, local living wages, and union dues deduction.
  2. A Real Safety Net for Working Families: Win real paid family leave, a living wage floor for home care workers, and a wage theft unit with teeth.
  3. Invest in Working People: Make community college actually free for the students who need it.

How we do it:

  1. Give Power Back to Workers: Repeal HB 433/SB 1492 (2024, heat-protection and living-wage preemption) and SB 256 (2023, public-sector payroll dues deduction ban, which exempted police/fire).
  2. A Real Safety Net for Working Families: Replace Florida's voluntary-insurance-only 2023 paid leave law with a mandatory payroll-funded program; raise and index the $15/hr Medicaid direct care wage floor set in 2022; create a wage theft enforcement unit (Florida has had none since abolishing its Department of Labor in 2002).
  3. Invest in Working People: Create a needs-based, last-dollar Florida Promise scholarship covering costs Bright Futures doesn't (housing, books, fees), modeled on Tennessee Promise.
